Mom’s Postpartum Kit

Once you are on the other side of birth your body will need time to heal and recover. You’ve just done something amazing, Congratulations! The marathon that is birth asks a lot of our body. Here are a few things that I have found helpful as a Postpartum Doula and a mother myself.

*note this is not an exhaustive list. Just practical items mom can keep on her bathroom counter.

-Disposable underwear. You will be bleeding (even if you have a c-section) for about 6 weeks. Usually the first 2 weeks are the heaviest. You’ll need to monitor the amount of blood and clots so I suggest these for the first week and wearing period panties the weeks following. I find them much more comfortable. During postpartum comfy is vital in my opinion!

*If you would rather use mesh panties and a pad (like they provide you with at a hospital after birth) I loved using Freda mom mesh briefs + a heavy flow pad. Some moms prefer using high waisted panties (lovingly referred to as granny panties) and a pad.

-Peri bottle. Everything will be a bit tender down there. Filling up your peri bottle with warm water will be very soothing and helpful when using the toilet. You need to refrain from wiping with toilet paper while your healing (just pat lightly instead) so this also helps to keep you clean.

-Tucks pads. These are so soothing. You can thank me later! Use one after using the toilet, Place one on your panties/pad, either way you’ll be happy you have these on hand.

-Flushable wipes whenever you do have to wipe it’s much easier to use flushable wipes instead of toilet paper. The gentler you can be down there the better.

You’re going to still have contractions after you give birth to your baby. But this is a good thing! Your body is working to shrink your uterus back down to its pre-pregnancy size. This is also necessary for closing up the would left by the placenta. A heating pad works wonders for these uncomfy contractions. Honestly I just prefer a sock filled with rice. The gentle pressure from the weight of the rice along with not having the hassle of a chord is great!

Did I leave out something you felt was vital for you during postpartum recovery? Let me know in the comments!
